We decorated for Halloween after General Conference ended last night, so out came the spooked black cat we added to our decor last year. Last year, Spencer was pretty scared of it. Not so this year! She is the favorite of both Spencer and Isaac. Isaac points to it, high up on the piano, and says, "Meow? Meow?" (In other words, "Hand me that cat, Mom!") And when I asked Spencer to put the cat back on the piano when he'd pulled it down, he said, "No, Mommy, Swishers doesn't want to be up there. Did you know that's her name?"
Swishers. Got it. I'm torn between wanting Swishers to remain a decoration and wanting to support my children's imaginative play. I turned the corner on a very cute scene after I'd been in the back of the house, using the bathroom. Spence had pulled Swishers down, again, and he and Isaac had her sitting on the DVD case (a little shelf about waist-height to them) and were saying a prayer with her, arms folded, heads bowed. I only caught the end of it:
Spencer: And thank thee that Swishers will have a good day. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Isaac: Na!
Swishers: Meow-men!
When Spencer spotted me watching, he explained that they were praying that Swishers wouldn't have any bad dreams. So darling.
Anyway, I guess Swishers is fairly durable, so I'll allow her to be both a decoration and a toy, as long as Isaac can keep himself from pulling her eyes off and chewing her tail. Unlikely at best.
Happy October!
