Fireworks

We were really unsure, heading to the fireworks last night, how either of our boys were going to react to repeated loud, bright, semi-close explosions. Isaac is terrified of vacuum cleaners. Spencer is terrified of thunder. But I figured we had to give it a try, fireworks being tradition and all.

And ... they both did great! Isaac sat securely in Joe's lap with a face full of wonder, repeating for the first full minute with his arm outstretched and unmoving, finger pointing at the sky, "Whoa! Whooooa! Whooooa!" And Spencer superglued himself to my lap and laughed and exclaimed along with the rest of us, though in a shaky, I'm-really-actually-quite-scared voice.

My favorite part of the experience was hearing Spencer's firework-shape interpretations.
"Whoa, that one looks like hair!" (you know the ones that leave dripping sparkly contrails)
"That was a rubber band!"
"That one looked like a necklace!"
"Those sounded like hammers---boom, boom, boom!"
And our favorite, there were some firework fountain-things on the ground with lots of smoke rising off of them, and Spencer cried out, "That looks like a drill!" And sure enough, the smoke coming off of the firecrackers looked exactly like a drill---head, trigger, big battery base and all. Funny kid. :)

Happy Fourth of July!
