Ebonics Experience and Truck Touching

So Spencer had his first real contact with an African American individual yesterday. He's played with kids at the library and talked to a kid on our street, but he hasn't spent any extended time with them, really. At eight o'clock last night, just as we were about to put Isaac in bed, a fast-talking saleswoman showed up at our door, offering us, we weren't really sure what, but we thought it amounted to a free shampooing of our living room rug. What followed was actually a two-hour Kirby vacuum demonstration and sales pitch. So yeah, the demonstrator didn't leave our house until about 10:15 last night, which was kind of ridiculous.

Anyway, the demonstrator, a black guy, who was super nice, was chatting with Joe about the vacuum and about Joe's schooling as he showed us just how dirty our carpets are and just how useless the vacuum we own is. (*sigh*) Unaccustomed to the guy's heavy-on-the-Ebonics way of talking, Spencer was having a hard time understanding him. At one point, he turned to Joe, and in his none-too-quiet three-year-old voice, asked, "Is he speaking Spanish?" I about died laughing when Joe told me. Our poor, uncultured children.

And, Touch-A-Truck Day fun ... (For my non-Illinoisan readers, this is a cool event at a local park where vehicles of all kinds gather for kids to see and experience up close---a school bus, a city bus, a huge tow truck, a backhoe, a firetruck, a racecar, a semi, etc.) Spencer had a blast, and surprisingly, so did Isaac.
I wish I'd stood back for this picture to get the full effect, because Spencer is like 8 feet off the ground in this big backhoe-front loader.
Isaac rockin' the fireman hat. Well, trying to take it off, actually.
Isaac did not want to get off of/out of any of the vehicles he got to sit in/on. He got particularly attached to the Harley.
Though he clearly loved the city bus as well.

And both of my children are now licensed drivers. Uh ... Yikes!

And just for fun, Isaac being clever:
He put the stethoscope around his neck himself, then grabbed the end and stuck it on Spencer's chest. Observant little guy! I had to snap a picture.
